Neighbourhood

The Sant’Ambrogio neighborhood, located in the historic center of Florence to the east of the Duomo, is one of the most authentic, lively and beloved areas by both Florentines and visitors. It is characterized by a popular and bohemian atmosphere, with a fascinating mix of tradition and modernity.

Main features:

Mercato di Sant’Ambrogio: the beating heart of the neighborhood, it is one of the oldest and most genuine markets in Florence. Open every day (except Sunday), it offers fresh products, cheeses, meat, fish, but also Tuscan street food. The interior houses historic stalls and a very popular restaurant.

Piazza Sant’Ambrogio: takes its name from the church of the same name, one of the oldest in the city, and is often animated by events, markets and the life of the bars that overlook it.

Local atmosphere: less touristy than other central areas, Sant’Ambrogio retains an authentic spirit, with historic shops, small art galleries, artisans, and a very present local community.

Nightlife and gastronomy: numerous cafes, restaurants and taverns make the neighborhood lively even in the evening. Popular destinations include Cibrèo, Le Vespe, Teatro del Sale, and more alternative venues frequented by students and artists.

Cultural diversity: the area is a crossroads of cultures and lifestyles, thanks also to its proximity to the University of Florence and the Jewish community, which has its own synagogue nearby.

Architecture and streets: the narrow, cobbled streets, the lived-in facades and the small courtyards tell the story of the truest Florence, far from the beaten track of mass tourism.

In short, Sant’Ambrogio is an ideal neighborhood for those seeking an authentic experience of the city: lively during the day, welcoming in the evening, rich in flavors, culture and humanity.

Transport

Tram and Bus in Florence:

The tram and bus ticket can be purchased from the AT-Bus app available for Android and Apple, which I strongly recommend using. But you can also pay directly on board with a debit, credit or prepaid card, as well as with enabled digital wallets, from a smartphone or smartwatch. Or even with an SMS by writing the message "Firenze" to the number 4880105. The ticket costs 1.70 euros and is valid for 90 minutes on both the bus and the tram. The ticket must be validated using the front ticket validator on board the vehicle, from that moment the ticket will be valid for 90 minutes on the Bus and Tram.
